[Dec. 25th, 2009|02:46 pm] |
There has been a lot of "donate to this charity" going around recently. I know campaigns get stepped up this time of year.
But which charities do you like and why? I donate to the food bank to offset my dad stealing from them, and because we really did need the food bank as kids. It's something I can see doing actual good. I donate trees through Arbor Day because I am a paper artist. And I donate to The Other Side Arts because I see all the good they do. |

| Santa |
[Dec. 25th, 2009|02:36 pm] |
My mom almost has taste in presents. Like everything is almost something you would want but is a little off. So everything is already re-wrapped to be re-gifted to people who would actually like this stuff. Because I know people who would totally love a sky blue fish plate, and a "haunted places of the world" calendar. Although I cannot think of who would like this Southwestern painted 5lb ceramic lizard. I already pawned the stack of "B" monogrammed hand towels off on my brother because you know his name starts with a "B." And he also took the gift card to Red Robin, because they serve booze.
Anyway. I got Dad the R. Crumb Genesis book, "It's exactly what I wanted!" Mom yells, "But you never tell anyone what you want!" Mom looked at me and said, "How did YOU know what he wanted?" "It's R. Crumb, and the Bible, of course he wants it."
I got a bike from randomdreams and sweater to match my bike from gows. And an art book. So I am totally happy. |

| Christmas Eve dinner |
[Dec. 24th, 2009|05:37 pm] |
I made thumbprint cookies the other day with howlands pistachio cinnamon marmalade and it's too bitter for cookies. So it went on the buffalo ribs now in the oven. I did a modified version of this salad: http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-encore110907,1,6528278.story More spicy in the dressing, fewer persimmons (I forgot I ate the other two), more pom, and toasted almonds. Maybe I'll do brie mashed potatoes. And plain broccoli on the side.
Uncle Mark is house sitting for someone but will come for dinner. He wants to bring dogs, we'll see how Lillian does. |

| Coolio's Chili Mac |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|10:44 pm] |
Coolio has a cookbook out. "Cooking With Coolio." randomdreams got it for his birthday. In it he describes his "Chili Mac Pimpin'" recipe, which is our standard Chili Mac except with a can of cream of mushroom soup added.
So the next time neuro42 comes over with long hair we will serve Chili Mac Pimpin'. If he has located a salon of proper repute in time I think I could manage some buffalo ribs. There's your motivation. |

The darkest day of the year is making me itchy and full of ennui.
I really want to be excited by the possibility of Mardi Gras, or we could see Les Claypool here for free. Nobody wants to go, nobody has the time or money.
------- I think I accidentally said I would hang out with hippies in the cold in Feb. "Wait, wait... You're playing with WHO... WHERE?" Oh god. I really hope I can get out of it. Too bad I can't get H1N1 again. Jesus, I'm so not leaving the house for that. -----
The Knuts are awesome. |

It's randomdreams's birthday!
Yesterday was apotropaic's birthday! We took her out to 9th Door for tapas, The Tilted Kilt (think Bennigans meets Hooters) for dessert, and Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret for dancing girls and a magic act.
Today birdmojo and maribou came over for Bike and Tea Shop, Cheese Shop, Book Store, and pizza. Later we had dinner with randomdreams family.
And I really liked Brittany Murphy. Faster Kill Pussycat was hot, Girl, Interrupted was hot, and Sin City was hot. damn. |

| Chili Mac |
[Dec. 18th, 2009|08:52 pm] |
and its variations.
I was looking at a cooking magazine the other day and they featured "Chili Mac." Now, I didn't know it is called "Chili Mac," because in my house growing up, and my Grandma's house, it was called "Johnny Smart." Really. Chili Mac is macaroni, ground meat, beans, tomatoes, spices... you get it. You've probably had it. What was it called when you were growing up?
Uncle Mark says that in the Military it is called Chili Mac and soldiers freaking love it.
randomdreams says his mom never made it, she says she never made it but her mother did and she called it Chili Boo.
gows has the most bananas contributions to Chili Mac. Make yourself some chicken ramen and add a can of chicken chili. Yeah, I was horrified. Almost as bad was her box of mac and cheese and then you add a can of chili.
Me, I use ground buffalo.
So, you and your chili mac?
EDIT: Further research also calls it American Chop Suey, Johnny Marzetti, Beefaroni, Chuckwagon, and Dead Dog, and it has been found in cookbooks as far back as 1918. |

| My Father |
[Dec. 17th, 2009|07:23 pm] |
|
So a long while back, I posted about the extremely traumatic exit from my father's studio, and from his life. It was violent, and it was bad. I feel that it is now equally important to update about how that is going. For a long while there we kept very far apart. A phone call here of there when things calmed down...but very little meeting face to face. But within the last year and a half, we have developed what I dare say is a REAL strong, nurturing father-daughter relationship. We both have grown..we both have left some of the very stressful times where we were doing things that were out of character and had us out of our minds...and we get along great now. It isn't due to staying off touchy subjects. It isn't due to either of us being afraid of hurting the other, and thus walking on eggshells. We did the work on the relationship, and we got through it...together. We even found a good balance to be able to work together some in business. Now, I am happy to say that the walks that I take with him and the dog Bali nearly every day are some of the moments in my day that I look forward to the most. With work, love, and dedication sometimes things CAN work out. =) |

| Long Time |

| [ | Current Mood |
| | awake | ] | I don't post here much as all of my friends seem to have migrated to facebook.
Nothing much has been going on. K earned her PhD and will be graduating soon. I reconnected with a good friend, known to many of you as Winter.
I wouldn't say I am in the clear with PTSD, but my sleep and cognitive abilities have been getting notably sharper. I don't know if I will ever feel as mentally sharp as I did before the war, but I have started to have daydreams again and remember some of the old concepts that I was interested in when I was on the track to becoming a Computer/Electrical Engineer. How far things have come since my planned graduation at the age of 26, functional exoskeletons are no longer just on paper...
My weight training has been steady and rewarding. I have gone back to bodybuilding training and will be taking a break from powerlifting/powerbuilding. Microtrauma and the sheer stress of moving poundages in the 300-400+ pound range (1,000 lbds on the leg press for a 1RM!) were taking their toll on my recovery and ability to train. I had a nice long layoff over Thanksgiving holiday and found to my amazement that I did not lose even an ounce of strength when I returned.
I gained a .5" on my thighs and calves, bringing them up to 26.5" and 16.5" respectively. It's going to be awkward buying pants when I shed this "winter padding" because I am going to have @ 30" waist with a leg size meant for people who have 38" waists. And friends, trust me I don't plan to quit gaining lean mass until I have hit at least 235lbds at 10% bodyfat. |

| Graduate School Fears (And Updates on Sale) |

| [ | Current Mood |
| | anxious | ] | Well - tomorrow I give the University of Sydney my final decision, and I'm nervous as all hell. It's a LOT of money, and I'm worried - that perhaps my degree won't be worth anything and I'll leave Australia with still - no ability to get a job. The degree is a Master in Film and Digital Image - it looks good, the University is good, but I've yet to really speak to many who've done it. I need the training for Film but I also want a degree that means something - I may want to pursue a PHD down the road...
So.. what do I do? I know I should have thought about this a lot sooner, however I guess I'm just a last minute panic kind of girl...
Thoughts?
Cheers...
PS: I also love live journal because you can emote the grim reality that you are freaking about over the prospect of ruining your financial future by spending thousands of dollars for grad school with a little kitty shaking back and forth as if he were in the Megathrust Earthquake of DOOOM!... see my lil mood thing for reference... |

| | accomplished | ] | So my first semester of nursing school is done! I got a B+ and am thrilled!!
It has been taking all of my time up though, so my apologies to people I have not seen or spoken too. My evenings and weekends have been full of nothing but studying.
Next semester is supposed to be harder and I have to balance that with stage managing BUG, which will be amazing.
I have lost 40 pounds, and plan on losing more.
Hope everyone is well! Happy Holidays. =D |
